| biography:
| Soldier of Swiss origin, born in Geneva, SW Switzerland. He served in the Swiss and French armies, and in 1794 joined the Dutch army, but refused to serve under the Batavian Republic and moved to Prussia in 1795. In 1805 he became tutor to the Prince of Orange, the future King William II, accompanying him in the Peninsula. He served as the prince's chief-of-staff (1814) and commanded at Quatre Bras. In 1831 he devised the 10-day campaign against the Belgians. He was later made a baron and retired from the army in 1837. |
