| British admiral, born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE England, UK. He joined the navy at 11, and from 1778 his career was closely connected with that of Nelson. He fought at Brest (1794), Cape St Vincent (1797), and Trafalgar (1805), where he succeeded Nelson as commander. He was created baron after Trafalgar, and is buried beside Nelson in St Paul's Cathedral. |
