| biography:
| English royalist statesman, a native of Sussex. He served abroad, and was returned for Kent in 1640 to the Long Parliament. There he opposed the Grand Remonstrance, but supported episcopacy. In 1642 he was created Chancellor of the Exchequer, and in 1643 Master of the Rolls. He was an influential counsellor of both Charles I and Charles II. |
