| biography:
| British field marshal, born in Glasgow, W Scotland, UK. He fought in the Peninsular War against Napoleon, where he was twice badly wounded, and after 30 years of duty in various garrisons fought in China (1842) and in the second Sikh war (1848–9). In the Crimean War (1854–6) he commanded the Highland Brigade in a campaign which included the renowned repulse of the Russians by the ‘thin red line’ at Balaclava. During the Indian Mutiny he commanded the forces in India, and effected the final relief of Lucknow. He was created baron in 1858. |
