| biography:
| Soldier, and administrator in India, born in Styche, Shropshire, WC England, UK. In 1743 he joined the East India Company, and took part in the campaigns against the French. In 1755 he was called to avenge the so-called Black Hole of Calcutta, and at Plassey (1757) defeated a large Indian–French force. For three years he was sole ruler of Bengal in all but name. In 1760, he returned to England, entered parliament, and was made a baron (1762). He returned to Calcutta (1765), effectively reformed the civil service, and re-established military discipline. His measures were seen as drastic, and he became the subject of a select committee enquiry upon his return to England in 1767. |
