| Ruler of Bengal under the nominal suzerainty of the Mughal empire. He came into conflict with the British over their fortification of Calcutta, and marched on the city in 1756. The British surrender led to the infamous Black Hole, for which he was held responsible. Following the recapture of Calcutta, the British under Clive joined forces with his general, Mir Jafar, and defeated him at Plassey in 1757. He fled to Murshidabad, but was captured and executed. |
