| British statesman, born in Holyhead, Anglesey, NW Wales, UK. He studied at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and became a solicitor in 1940. Elected Labour MP for Anglesey (1951–79), he became minister of state for the Commonwealth (1964–6), secretary of state for Wales (1966–8), and minister of agriculture, fisheries and food (1968–70). He later served as leader of the Opposition in the Lords (1982–92) and Opposition spokesman on the Civil Service, foreign affairs, and Welsh affairs (1983–92). He was made a Companion of Honour in 1977, and a life peer in 1979. |
