| biography:
| Art historian, born in London, UK. He studied at Oxford, became keeper of the Department of Fine Art in the Ashmolean Museum (1931–3), director of the National Gallery (1934–45), and professor of fine art at Oxford (1946–50). He was also chairman of the Independent Television Authority (1954–7). In addition to his acclaimed scholarly work on Leonardo da Vinci, he wrote many popular books on his subject, and became widely known through his television series Civilisation (1969). He was given a life peerage in 1969. |
