| biography:
| British statesman, born in Epsom, Surrey, SE England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and became a teacher (1905–14) and local councillor (1920–7), before entering parliament briefly in 1923. He became home secretary in the 1945 Labour government, and Leader of the House of Commons in 1951. A humanitarian reformer, he was responsible for the Criminal Justice Act of 1948. He became a life peer in 1964. |
