| biography:
| British soldier, born in Surrey, SE England, UK. He studied at Winchester College, and was commissioned into the Royal Tank Corps in 1935. In World War 2 he served with distinction in North Africa (1941–3), in Italy (1943) and Normandy (1944), and commanded the 4th Independent Armoured Brigade in North West Europe (1944–5). He later became chief of the general staff (1971–3) and of the defence staff (1973–6). He was knighted in 1966 and raised to the peerage in 1977. |
