| biography:
| Jurist and politician, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. He studied at Edinburgh University, helped to found the Edinburgh Review (1802), was called to the English bar in 1808, and entered parliament in 1810. His eloquence and boldness made him a popular hero for some time (1820–30). He accepted a peerage and the chancellorship (1830), assisted materially in carrying the Reform Bill, and introduced several law reforms. He designed the brougham (carriage), which is named after him. |
