| biography:
| British politician and pacifist, a founder of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, born in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) into a missionary family. He went into journalism, joined the Independent Labour Party, became a militant pacifist, and was imprisoned during World War 1. Elected to parliament for the first time in 1929–31, and again in 1950–64, he was made a life peer in 1964. |
