| Novelist and broadcaster, born in Wigton, Cumbria, NW England, UK. He studied at Oxford, and joined the BBC as a producer in 1961, publishing his first novel, For Want of a Nail, in 1965. Later novels include The Silken Net (1974), Love and Glory (1983), A Time to Dance (1990), Crystal Rooms (1992), Credo (1996), and A Son of War (2001). His other writing includes screenplays and musicals. He has been presenter and editor of ITV's The South Bank Show since 1978, and presenter of BBC Radio 4's Start the Week (1988–98). He was head of arts (later, controller) at London Weekend Television (1982–90), became chairman of Border Television in 1990, and was reappointed as controller of arts and features at London Weekend Television in 2000. He received a life peerage in 1998. |
