| biography:
| British statesman and aviator, the first holder of a flying licence. He studied at Cambridge, and during World War 1 served with the Royal Flying Corps. He was responsible for several innovations in aerial photography. In 1918 he entered parliament and became private parliamentary secretary to Churchill at the War Office. Between 1923 and 1927 he served two periods of office as parliamentary secretary to the ministry of transport. He became minister of transport (1940) and of aircraft production (1941), but resigned because of public displeasure at his outspoken criticism of Britain's ally, the USSR. |
