| Administrator, the son of Lady Violet Bonham-Carter. He studied at Oxford and Chicago universities, contested several seats as a Liberal candidate, and represented Torrington as MP (1958–9). He was director of the Royal Opera House (1958–82), a governor and vice-chairman of the BBC (1975–81), a governor of the Royal Ballet (1960–85), then chairman of the governors. He was the first chairman of the Race Relations Board (1966–70) and chairman of the Community Relations Commission (1971–7). He was created a life peer in 1986. |
