| Lawyer and politician, born in Ulverston, Cumbria, NW England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, was called to the bar (1913), and earned a brilliant reputation as counsel in notable murder trials. He was a Liberal MP (1923–4, 1929–31). A judge of the King's Bench Division (1941-50), he figured prominently in the summing up of the Nuremberg Trials (1945–6). A lord justice of appeal (1950–7), he was raised to the peerage in 1958. |
