| biography:
| British politician. He studied at Cambridge (1953), and went into industry, later moving to the Economist Intelligence Unit. He entered the House of Commons in 1971, and following the 1979 general election was made chief secretary to the Treasury. A monetarist in economic policy, he favoured a more pragmatic approach in social matters than the prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, and, although he became a successful Leader of the Commons, was removed from the cabinet after the 1987 general election. He was created a life peer in 1997. |
