| biography:
| Chemist, born near Linköping, SE Sweden. He studied at Uppsala, becoming professor at Stockholm (1807–32). His accurate determination of atomic weights established the laws of combination and John Dalton's atomic theory. He introduced modern symbols (1828), an electrochemical theory, discovered the elements selenium, thorium, and cerium, and first isolated others. Soon after Volta's invention of the electric battery, he began to experiment with the voltaic pile battery which was to revolutionize physics and chemistry by providing scientists with a continuous source of current. Among the standard laboratory equipment that he introduced are wash bottles, filter paper, and rubber tubing. He was made a baron in 1835. |
