| Naval commander, born in Philipstown, Co Offaly, C Ireland. He entered the British navy in 1859, and was promoted captain in 1882 for his services at the bombardment of Alexandria. He was a Lord of the Admiralty (1886–8), sat in parliament as a Conservative, and commanded the Mediterranean Fleet (1905–7) and Channel Fleet (1907–9). |
