| Newspaper proprietor, born in New York City, USA, the son of William Waldorf Astor, 1st Viscount. He studied at Oxford, was aide-de-camp to the viceroy of India (1911–14), and was elected MP for Dover in 1922. He became chairman of the Times Publishing Company after the death of Lord Northcliffe, resigning his directorship in 1962. He was succeeded as chairman in 1959 by his eldest son, Gavin Astor (1918–84). |
