| Inventor and industrialist, born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE England, UK. In 1840 he produced a much improved hydraulic engine, in 1842 an apparatus for producing electricity from steam, and in 1845 the hydraulic crane. His factory later became famous for its ordnance, especially the Armstrong breech-loading gun. His house at Cragside, Northumbria, was the first to be be lit by incandescent electric light bulbs developed by Swan. |
