biography: English naval commander, born at Shugborough Park, Staffordshire, C England, UK. He entered the navy in 1712, and was made a captain in 1724. In 1739 he received the command of a Pacific squadron, and sailed from England (1740), circumnavigating the globe in three years and nine months. In 1761 he was appointed Admiral of the Fleet. He wrote Voyage Round the World (1748), the story of his travels.
