| British statesman, born in Duffryn, Aberdare, S Wales, UK. He was called to the bar in 1837, and was elected Liberal MP for Merthyr Tydfil (1852–73). Home secretary under Gladstone (1868–73), he then became Lord President of the Council (1873–4). Influential in the movement for the establishment of the University of Wales, he was its first chancellor in 1895. |
