| biography:
| Australian pioneer, born in the East End of London, UK. He arrived in Australia in 1821 to join his brother Solomon (1794–1833), who had been transported for stealing a chest of tea, and then pardoned. He was the first free Jewish settler to arrive in the new colony, and was soon in business, dealing in general goods and books. He established one of the first lending libraries in Australia. The first person to be granted a theatre licence in the colony, he opened on a temporary stage in 1832, and built the Theatre Royal in 1833. |
