| biography:
| Dutch politician and prime minister (1971–3), born in Haarlemmerliede, W Netherlands. He became a trade union executive, then MP (1956–63) for the Anti-Revolutionary Party (ARP), vice-premier and minister of agriculture (1963–7), leader of the ARP (1967), then prime minister. He left politics in 1973, became chairman of the Board of the National Investment Bank (1971–97), and in 1997 became chairman of the Netherlands Aruba Joint Committee. |
