| Social activist, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. She worked as a public relations executive, becoming director of the Episcopal Publishing Co. In the late 1960s she joined the Church of the Advocate, campaigning for social and civil rights. She was ordained a priest in 1980, and made history when she became the first woman to be consecrated an assistant bishop in the Episcopal Church (1989) - an appointment which was highly controversial within the Anglican Church. |
