Political rebel and murderer (as described in Mark 15, Luke 23), who was arrested but apparently released by popular acclaim in preference to Pilate's offer to release Jesus of Nazareth. He was possibly also called ‘Jesus Barabbas’ (in some manuscripts of Matt 27.16-17).
