| biography:
| British statesman, born in London, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and captained the British Olympic team in 1912, where he won a silver medal in the 1500 m. He served on the secretariat of the League of Nations (1919–22), became professor of international relations at London (1924–9), and was elected a Labour MP (1929–31, 1936–70). He was secretary of state for air (1946–7) and of commonwealth relations (1947–50), and minister of fuel and power (1950–1). A lifelong campaigner for peace through multilateral disarmament, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1959, and created a life peer in 1977. |
