| biography:
| Judge, born in Aberdeen, NE Scotland, UK. He studied at Cambridge and Edinburgh, and practised at the Scottish bar. He became a judge of the Court of Session and the High Court in 1972, and later that year became the first British judge appointed to the Court of Justice of the European Communities in Luxembourg. From 1984 until his retirement in 1988 he was President of the Court of Justice. He was created a life peer in 1988. |
