| Actress, born in New York City, USA. She made her professional debut on television in an adaptation of Turgenev's Torrents of Spring. For her performance in the stage production of The Miracle Worker in 1959, she won a Tony Best Actress award, and an Oscar for the film version in 1962. Later films include The Graduate (1968), The Elephant Man (1980), 84 Charing Cross Road (1987, BAFTA best actress), Home For the Holidays (1995), G.I. Jane (1997), Great Expectations (1998), and Up at the Villa (1999). In 1996 she received the Lifetime Achievement in Comedy award at the American Comedy Awards. She married director and writer Mel Brooks in 1964. |
