| biography:
| Soldier and ‘jocoso’ poet, born in Seville, SW Spain. A writer of racy, humorous light verse combining fluency with rhythm, he never considered his work worthy of publication. What little survives was published by his friend Francisco Pachero. His numerous epigrams, influenced by Martial, are stylish and not without malice, his sonnets workmanlike, and the love poems often exquisite. In Tres cosas me tienen preso he proclaims equal affection for his lady, smoked ham, and aubergines in melted cheese. |
