| biography:
| Philosopher and writer, born in Belmonte de Calayatud, Spain. He entered the Jesuit order in 1619 and later became head of the College at Tarragona. His early works, such as The Man of Discretion (1646), are all heavily didactic guides to life. He set out his literary ideas on conceptismo, the art of conceited writing, in Subtlety and the Art of Genius (1642). He is best known, however, for his three-part allegorical novel, The Critic (1651, 1653, 1657), in which civilization and society are portrayed through the eyes of a savage. |
