| biography:
| Duke of Lower Lorraine (1089–95), and leader of the First Crusade, born in Baisy, SC Belgium. He served under Emperor Henry IV against Rudolph of Swabia, and in 1084 in the expedition against Rome. He was elected one of the principal commanders of the First Crusade, and later became its chief leader. After the capture of Jerusalem (1099) he was proclaimed king, but he refused the crown, accepting only the title Defender of the Holy Sepulchre. |
