| Jazz musician, born in New York City, USA. He was one of many white jazz musicians to emerge in the USA after World War 2. Alto playing with Miles Davis, he moved to California in 1952, and formed his own quartet. A technically accomplished musician, he experimented to produce a distinctive sound which proved popular and commercially successful. His motion pictures include Jazz on a Summer's Day, I Want to Live (both 1958), and The Subterraneans (1960). |
