| Writer, born in Thomasville, Georgia, USA. She studied at Florida State University (1973 BA), taught first grade in Thomasville, and lived in the same house where she was born. Beginning in 1990 she was a commentator for National Public Radio's All Things Considered. A popular essayist and storyteller, she has received critical praise for her humorous writings in Mama Makes Up Her Mind (1993), Sleeping at the Starlite Motel (1995), and Quite a Year for Plums (1998). |
