| Religious leader, born in Tehran, Iran, the founder of the Baha'i faith. He became a follower of Bab-ed-Din, the founder of the Babi movement. Persecuted and imprisoned in 1852, Baha'u'llah was exiled to Baghdad, Constantinople, and Acre. In 1863 he proclaimed himself as the prophet that Bab-ed-Din had foretold, and became the leader of the new Baha'i religion. |
