| First Mughal Emperor of India, born in Ferghana, E Uzbekistan. After failing to establish himself in Samarkand, he invaded India, defeating Ibrahim Lodi decisively at the Battle of Paniput in 1526, and laying the foundation for the Mughal Empire. The following year he defeated the Hindu Rajput confederacy. A soldier of genius, he was also a cultured man with interests in architecture, music, and literature. Himself a Muslim, he initiated a policy of toleration towards his non-Muslim subjects. He was succeeded by his son, Humayun. |
