| British field marshal, born in London, UK. He trained at Sandhurst Military Academy, fought in South Africa and in World War 1, and at the outbreak of World War 2 was appointed commander of British troops in Egypt. He led the initial British advance in Libya (1940–1) and the unsuccessful Greek campaign (1941), and became commander-in-chief, Middle East (1943), and supreme allied commander in the Mediterranean theatre (1944). He headed the British Joint Staff Mission in Washington (1945–7), and was raised to the peerage in 1946. |
