| British statesman, born in Dunstan, Staffordshire, C England, UK. He trained at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and joined the Royal Artillery, but left the army in 1933 to become a barrister. He was called to the bar in 1935, and became a Conservative MP in 1938. President of the Board of Trade (1951–7), he resigned after a year in office as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1957–8). He later became minister of aviation (1960–2), and minister then secretary of state for defence (1962–4), but lost his parliamentary seat in the 1966 election. Created a life peer in 1967, he later became chairman of the Conservative Party (1975–81). |
