| biography:
| Archaeologist and folklorist, born in Caravia, Asturias, NW Spain. He studied in Mieres to obtain the title of Ayudante facultativo de Minas y Fábricas Metalúrgicas. He began writing in 1907, when he published a series of articles about the 1907 International Exhibition in Bordeaux and stories of his travels abroad. In 1917–19 he collected data relating to the geography, prehistory, history, architecture, agriculture, and folklore of his native village. In 1924 he wrote an article on the slang of certain groups of tradesmen for the Boletin del Centro de Estudios Asturianos. From 1919 he dedicated himself to folkloric research, publishing El libro de Caravia and Del Folklore Asturiano. Ménendez Pidal's enthusiastic reception of the former, and his suggestion that its author continue his labours by putting together a collection of stories, prompted de Llano to travel through Asturias collecting not only stories but also folkloric material including romances, songs, customs, myths, superstitious beliefs, and dialectal words. |
