| biography:
| Queen of Palmyra (in modern Syria), born there probably of Arab descent. She became the wife of the Bedouin Odenathus, lord of the city, who in AD 264 was recognized by Gallienus as Governor of the East. On her husband's murder (c.267) she embarked on a war of expansion, conquered Egypt in 269, and in 270 overran nearly the whole of the E provinces in Asia Minor, and declared her son the Eastern emperor. When Aurelian became emperor he marched against her and defeated her at Antioch (now Antakya, Turkey). She was led in triumphal procession at Rome, and later married a Roman senator. |
