| Agricultural chemist and writer, born in Frankfurt, WC Germany. After studying in Göttingen and Utrecht, he worked in Edinburgh, and was appointed professor of agriculture at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, in 1849. His work on farm feeding-stuffs, soils, and artificial manures greatly advanced agricultural chemistry. |
