| Elector of Saxony, born in Freiberg, modern Germany, who succeeded his brother Maurice as leader of the German Protestant princes. He first favoured the Calvinistic doctrine of the sacraments, and then, becoming Lutheran, persecuted the Calvinists (from 1574). He gave a great impetus to the arts, education, and commerce, reorganizing Saxony into a model state. The Dresden library and most galleries owe their origin to him. |
