| Surveyor and explorer, born in Farnsfield, Nottinghamshire, C England UK. He went to Australia in 1829, joined the Western Australian Survey Department in 1841, and undertook several expeditions to explore the Australian interior. He discovered coal on the Irwin R (1846), and lead on the Murchison R (1848), then headed the Northern Australian Expedition (1855–6), which discovered new pastures along the reverse of the route of Ludwig Leichhardt. He was surveyor general of the new state of Queensland (1859). |
