| US representative, senator, and diplomat, born at Ste Genevieve, Missouri, USA. Settling in Iowa in 1838, he went to the US House of Representatives as a territorial delegate (Democrat, Iowa, 1840–6) and was then one of Iowa's first US senators (1848–55). During 1855–9 he served as ambassador to Spain. |
