| biography:
| Botanist, born in Geneva, SW Switzerland. He studied medicine in Geneva, and from 1798 botany in Paris, and by 1813 had developed a general scheme of plant taxonomy which was to dominate plant classification for 50 years, his Théorie élémentaire de la botanique. He used the scheme in a major series of volumes on botany, completed by his son Alphonse de Candolle (1806–93). He also did much to establish plant geography and to relate vegetation to soil type, a study supported by his extensive expeditions. |
