| biography:
| Playwright, born in Paris, France. The master of the ‘well-made’ play, after 1816 his productions became so popular that he established a theatre workshop in which numerous collaborateurs worked under his supervision, turning out plays by ‘mass-production’ methods. The best known are Le Verre d'eau (1840, The Glass of Water), Adrienne Lecouvreur (1848), and Bataille des dames (1851, Battle of the Ladies). He also wrote novels and composed the libretti for 60 operas, including those of Rossini, Verdi, Auber, Boieldieu, Adam and, especially, Meyerbeer. |
