| Chemist, born in La Folie, NE France. After eight years as professor in Bordeaux (1838–45) he went to Paris to work with Charles Frédéric Gerhardt. There, he was forced by financial difficulties to become assayer at the Mint from 1848. He propounded the nucleus theory of organic radicals, discovered anthracine, worked on the classification of organic compounds, and gave his name to Laurent's acid. |
