| biography:
| Painter, born in Moscow, Russia. He spent his childhood in Italy, and his early work was carried out in Paris. In Russia (1914–21) he founded the Russian Academy and became head of the Museum of Modern Art. In 1922 he was in charge of the Weimar Bauhaus. He moved to Paris in 1933, and became a naturalized French citizen in 1939. He had a great influence on young European artists, and was a leader of the Blaue Reiter group. |
