| Pope (440–61), probably born in Tuscany. One of the most eminent of the Latin Fathers, he summoned the Council of Chalcedon (451), where the intention of his ‘Dogmatical Letter’, defining the doctrine of the Incarnation, was accepted. He also made treaties with the Huns and Vandals in defence of Rome, and consolidated the primacy of the Roman see. Feast day 10 November (W), 18 February (E). |
